Goldeneye videos, news and facts

Goldeneyes are ducks with a cunning way of raising their chicks. Goldeneyes are medium sizes diving ducks which make their nests in holes or nesting boxes in tall trees.

The young birds leave the nests before they can fly and have to jump from their nests to the ground and follow their mother to the nearest pond. They have to walk there and are vulnerable to predators.

The  BBC Springwatch website has some video of this which shows how brave the young ducks are. The video below shows the young ducks leaving the nest.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

The next video shows them safely on the water after travelling 1km, which was quite a trek for the young birds.

Goldeneyes can be seen at Baron’s Haugh in Motherwell.
